the return of Fred Rutten
By: Tucker | December 3rd, 2008The initial draw that paired Twente and Schalke 04 put forth the most unlikely combination as long-time Twente man Fred Rutten is now the managers of the German side. However Schalke’s fortunes haven’t been so good this year as they are ninth in the Bundesliga table and riding a two-match losing streak. As rumours swirl of his future and many fans suggesting a change is needed, without a victory tomorrow Schalke is unlikely to advance and possibly cost him his job. Conversely Twente is moving straight ahead with a solid victory against ADO on the weekend and the 6-0 destruction of Heerenveen behind them and know a victory today will see them advance.
De Tukkers are fully-fit for the match with the veteran combination of Kenneth Perez, Blaise Kufo and Theo Janssen in deadly form. Schalke’s walking wounded of Marcel Bordo, Peter Loevenkrands and Albert Streit will hamper Rutten’s plans. Keys to Twente’s success is holding their attacking side of Kevin Kurányi, Jefferson Farfán and Turkish international Halil Altıntop off the score-sheet as they have in the last two matches.
